Quick Tips for Indie Publishing

GIVE YOURSELF AMPLE TIME

Do not leave the cover design right up until the very end.  Have your cover design deadline at least a couple months in advance from when you want to publish.

This allows you to have time to get test copies and ensure everything is correct, and gives time to fix anything that may have printed wonky!

And let's be honest, many artists work slowly, not to mention life happens!  It's better to have a deadline that is before your actual deadline, that way if anything unexpected happens you'll still be on track.

PLAN OUT SPACE FOR TYPOGRAPHY

If you are commissioning art separate from your typography, be sure to have the artist think about space for typography!

There’s nothing worse than having to cover up beautiful details of the art, or worse yet, trying to fit the title between the important parts of the artwork, having it turn out small or unimpressive.

Because let’s be honest, the most important thing a reader is going to see is your title.  If they can’t see the title from across Barnes and Noble, they’re going to struggle finding it.

DON'T SKIP THE TEST PRINT

Test prints of your book are SO important! â€‹

Things often print much differently than how they look on the screen.  They might end up darker, things may be misaligned, or it may just look 'off' in print as opposed to on the screen.

Getting a test print (or a couple) ensures you catch any discrepancies, and can fix any potential problems before it goes out to your readers!
